A modern and efficient railway station is pivotal to the future prosperity of the area. However, studies show that Northampton Station is already at capacity during peak hours, while the station building and its associated facilities are out-of-date, and a constraint to economic growth.
Using contemporary design, WNDC is working with its partners to redevelop the station. The scheme is being brought forward on a phased basis. Phase one will see the provision of a new station building, which would be around twice the size of the current building. Set over two storeys, it will be a bright a welcoming station with a large glass facade.
Later phases could include a 1270 space multi-storey car park connected to the new station via a footbridge. This would free up land for a 28,000 sq m new commercial development on the existing car park site.
The new station will be on a completely different footprint to the current building, directly next to Black Lion Hill. This means that the current building can remain open while the new station is being constructed, minimising disruption to passengers. Work on site is expected to start before the end of 2012 and complete in 2014.
