Plans approved for Northampton Station development
Outline plans for a major redevelopment of Northampton Railway Station have been completed and approved.
The new station would provide an iconic gateway to the town, as well as more capacity and better facilities. Later phases of the scheme, which will be subject to a separate planning application in future, include a major office development on land surrounding the station.
The station plans will also support the redevelopment of former industrial land along the River Nene. The site is part of the proposal for a Northampton Waterside Enterprise Zone, which is currently being considered by government and has the potential to create over 13,000 new jobs.
West Northamptonshire Development Corporation is working in partnership with Network Rail to deliver the station scheme. They have officially completed the station’s outline design and have received ‘prior planning approval’ from Northampton Borough Council. Full planning permission is not required as the site is covered by Network Rail’s permitted development rights.
Peter Mawson, WNDC’s Chief Executive, said: “As part of the overall regeneration of Northampton town centre, the new station will support the creation of new jobs for local people. With the outline design completed and approved, we have reached an important phase in this complex and long-term project”
Gary Tordoff, Network Rail route enhancement manager, said: “The improvements proposed for Northampton station will help drive and support continued economic growth in the area. We have built a strong working relationship with WNDC and we will continue to work with them on this project for the benefit of rail users and the local community.”
Councillor Tim Hadland, Northampton Borough Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and enterprise said: “A new and modern railway station is an important part of the regeneration of our town. We already have a number of exciting projects underway and are working on proposals such as an Enterprise Zone which will bring businesses and jobs to Northampton.”
“To support our town’s growing needs we need excellent transport links, making the redevelopment of Castle Station essential. As well as creating a modern facility to welcome people to our town, I hope we can also recognise the historical importance of the site and the castle’s place in Northampton’s history.”
WNDC and Northamptonshire Enterprise Partnership have funded the design stage and a range of funding options are being explored for delivery of the station. This includes a bid to the £950m Regional Growth Fund, which was submitted last month and is currently being considered by the government.
