Northampton - The Market
City
Northampton is a town with a fantastic history and heritage. It is
also a place of growth and opportunity. Building on its heritage as
a market town for over 800 years, Northampton is beginning its
transformation into the Market City of the future. Together, WNDC,
the local authorities and the private sector are delivering a
number of key projects to help make this happen.
They include:
Castle Station – the development of a new station building and
multi-storey car park, together with 26,000 sq m associated
commercial development. An outline design is currently being
progressed and will be completed by the end of 2010.
Grosvenor Centre – an extension to the existing Grosvenor retail
centre, doubling its capacity and providing 40,000 sq m of new
retail space. This project will involve demolition of the adjacent
Greyfriars Bus Station.
Waterside – the regeneration of brownfield and industrial land
along the river Nene in Northampton town centre, providing over
90,000 sq m of high quality mixed use development. It comprises
numerous parcels of land which are currently being acquired. A
draft masterplan is in place.
St John’s – the creation of a new ‘cultural quarter’ in the town
centre, as well as a base for public services, offices and niche
retail. Northampton Borough Council and Northamptonshire County
Council are the principal landowners. A masterplan for the area has
been produced by the local authorities and WNDC.
Avon Nunn Mills - up to 2,000 new homes and major
commercial development on a prominent brownfield waterside
location. There are multiple landowners and it comprises three
sites separated by Nunn Mills road and a railway line.
