Vital new road is officially opened in Northampton

The multi-million pound Sandy Lane Improvement North - a new road which will eventually form part of an orbital route to the west of Northampton, has officially opened.

Northamptonshire County Council, the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC) all combined their resources to deliver the £7.2 million project. The development, which was contracted out to Carillion Civil Engineering, involved the construction of a 1.8km single carriageway between the A428 Harlestone Road and Berrywood Road and runs to the west of the existing Sandy Lane.

Cllr Heather Smith, county council cabinet member for highways, minerals and waste, said: “This road will play an important part in supporting future growth and development in Northampton and is also essential in alleviating some existing traffic pressure.”

Chris Garden, WNDC’s Director of Regeneration and Development said: “This scheme is the latest in a series of three new roads being delivered in the west of Northampton. As part of a wider regeneration plan, they will improve transport connections in a key part of the town and contribute to growth in the local economy.”

Anthony Sowden, Area Manager for the HCA, said: “The Sandy Lane Improvement North is a key piece of road infrastructure for Northampton, which combined with other recent strategic investment in the area, is helping to deliver future growth and regeneration in the town.”

The scheme included the construction of two roundabouts, one at the northern end on the A428 and a double mini-roundabout at the southern end. It is planned that the route will eventually connect with the Sandy Lane Relief Road. Other features of interest are a bridge carrying Port Road over the new highway, and a 2km cycleway, partly utilising the old Sandy Lane, to encourage more sustainable travel choices.
