Footbridge to make way at Northampton Station
On Sunday 25 August 2013 the footbridge at Northampton Railway Station will be dismantled, as it makes way for a new and improved replacement.
It follows the start of construction of the new Northampton Station earlier this week. The £20m development will include a wider and more spacious footbridge that is directly connected to the new station building. In the meantime, a temporary footbridge is serving the needs of passengers, after opening for use last month.
Chris Garden, Director of Regeneration at West Northamptonshire Development Corporation said: “The old footbridge was out of date and at capacity during peak times of travel. Its removal marks an important stage in the construction programme, as we make way for a much improved crossing.
“The new footbridge will be emblematic of the overall station development – providing more space and a better travel experience”
To minimise disruption, the removal of the footbridge has been scheduled so it coincides with wider, planned engineering works on the West Coast Main Line. It will therefore be undertaken during rail service restrictions that were planned anyway. This includes rail replacement buses operating on the line between Northampton and London Euston during Sunday.
