Work starts this week on the construction of Daventry’s new University Technical College (UTC).

Focusing on sustainable technologies, the UTC will support up to 600 students aged from 14 to 19-years-old. Students will have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience with relevant employers, including Cummins Ltd, Cosworth, DHL, ProLogis, Hiforce and SDC.

Chris Moody, Chair of the UTC Board of Governors said: “With the UTC opening its doors to its first pupils next autumn, the programme for building work is expected to progress quickly and local people will no doubt see significant changes to the landscape within the next few weeks.”

Peter Bates, programme director for Shepherd Construction added: “We’re delighted to be starting work on-site and using our experience in working in partnership with all the stakeholders to deliver a fantastic learning environment for the students.”

The UTC will be built to high environmental standards using sustainable materials including an innovative walling system known as SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels). It will also feature green roofs and photovoltaic panels.

WNDC has granted £300,000 towards the construction costs of the flagship scheme. Moulton College and the University of Northampton are the main project sponsors, alongside other key partners including Daventry District Council and Northamptonshire County Council.
