iConic artworks are officially returned

27
May

For over a year, a collection of creative artworks have brought a splash of colour to the construction site of Daventry’s new landmark – the iCon Environmental Innovation Centre. Now the building is complete and open for business, the pictures have been returned to their rightful owners – 10 students from Danetre and William Parker School.

The pictures, which won a specially organised art competition in 2009, were designed to reflect the theme of ‘a bright future for Daventry’. They were displayed on the safety hoardings surrounding the iCon whilst it was being constructed and expressed the students’ vision for the town. The artworks also took centre stage in a recent art exhibition at the iCon, which was part of a week of community events to mark the opening of the building.

Local MP Chris Heaton-Harris handed the artworks back to the students in an official presentation at the iCon on 27th May. It also gave the students a chance to see inside the award winning building, which was just a muddy construction site when their pictures were first unveiled.

Chris Heaton-Harris MP said: “I would like to thank all the students for brightening up the iCon construction site so beautifully. It has been great to see so much talent on display for everyone to enjoy. Daventry’s bright future is well on the way thanks to their help.”

John Liddle, Director of the iCon said: “The students’ artworks made a great impact and they should be proud that their work has been seen by so many people. The arts competition is just one of the ways we have tried to involve the local community in the development. The iCon will be a major asset for the town for years to come, playing home to some of the country’s greenest and most cutting edge businesses”

The iCon, which was delivered by WNDC, provides office accommodation and support to businesses that are involved in low carbon construction and environmental technologies. The building also includes a café, exhibition space, and an auditorium for 300 people, which is available for conferences and other events.
