Eager volunteers from WNDC have been helping to improve one of Northampton’s much loved public parks. On Sunday 16th October, a team of WNDC employees and their families became gardeners for the day at Eastfield Park.
They supported the Friends of Eastfield Park to enhance natural habitats, clear pathways and plant new flowers. The activities also included the creation of an ‘Eco Wall’ - a man made habitat for insects, fungi, mosses and lichens, which provide food for local wildlife.
The group’s younger volunteers enjoyed planting bulbs, which were donated by WNDC. In three hours, the group of 17, guided by the Vice-chair of FoEP Dr Vic Smith, planted over 80 snowdrops and 90 Narcissi.
Dr Vic Smith, said: “I enjoyed the day and I’m very pleased with what WNDC managed to achieve. Our committee wishes me to pass on our formal thanks to WNDC and their families.”
Rhea Keehn, Governance, Policy & Communications Officer at WNDC, said: “Eastfield Park is a beautiful place and it was fun to have the team and their families working together to improve the woodland area. The weather was on our side that day and I hope we will be able to volunteer there again in the near future. Next time I take a walk or bike ride to Eastfield Park, I’ll have fond memories.”
WNDC aims to continue working alongside FoEP to assist in the transformation of the woodland into a valuable habitat for birds, mammals and insects that will have a lasting positive effect on the local environment.
The Corporation has a history of supporting local gardening projects. In the past, volunteers from the Corporation have also helped the Friends of Delapre Abbey to make improvements to the grounds of the historic building.
