“At its time, WNDC was one of just three Urban Development Corporations in the UK.”

Established by Government in December 2004, WNDC was charged with delivering new jobs, homes and investment across Northampton, Daventry and Towcester. Located at the centre of England, this area was recognised as one of the UK’s best opportunities for both housing and economic growth.

WNDC had a wide range of powers including:

  • Investment –

WNDC invested £120 million in the regeneration of West Northamptonshire, supporting major improvements in all three towns.

  • Development –

The Corporation had a range of specialist powers, including the ability to acquire, manage and sell land and property, together with powers to develop, invest and provide business support.

  • Planning –

For part of its life, WNDC had the responsibility to determine strategic planning applications. During its time as a planning authority, the Corporation approved over 6,000 new homes and nearly 2 million sqm of commercial development, safeguarding thousands of new jobs. WNDC’s planning powers were returned to the local authorities on a phased basis, starting in 2011.
