Award winning road opened

The Lord Mayor of Northampton, Councillor Brian Markham officially opened the Upton Valley Way North to motorists, pedestrians and cyclists on the 14th May
Over 50 invited guests joined development partners, the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), Halcrow, Birse, Northamptonshire County Council (NCC) and West Northamptonshire Development Corporation (WNDC) to participate in the event.
The event celebrated the successful partnership project which will serve for the future growth of Northamptonshire, as well as providing increased flood protection and enhance the environmental credentials of the area. The project team were presented with both a CEEQUAL award and an Institute of Civil Engineering East Midlands Merit Award (EMMA) for environmental management and overall project achievement.
To mark the occasion local residents watched the official ribbon cutting by the Mayor and members of the on-site construction team. Then, the Worshipful The Mayor Councillor Brian Marhkam and Mayoress Councillor Irene Markham were the first to take to the tarmac, leading a procession of the first road users in the mayoral car.
The Mayor, Councillor Brian Markham, said: “I was involved on this scheme during the first stage of planning and am very pleased to be here today marking the official opening of the new road. The partners, HCA, Halcrow, Birse Civils, NCC and WNDC have truly worked in partnership to deliver this major regeneration project for Northampton. They have shown commitment to the environment, the local people and the construction work involved – demonstrated by the awards achieved.
“Upton Valley Way North will have significant impact on the economic prosperity of the region and, in addition to improved transport conditions, Northampton residents will be able to enjoy additional benefits as a country park with public footpaths and cycle routes being developed in the near future.”
Harj Dhaliwal, director of infrastructure delivery at WNDC said: “WNDC is proud to be part of the project and witness the opening of a major piece of infrastructure in the south-west district of Northampton. This unlocks the potential for new schools, community facilities, country park and will have a knock on effect for further employment opportunities in Northampton”.
The 1.5km road The road, which runs across the Nene Valley, joining the A4500 Weedon Road to the Swan Valley development area, is part of a major infrastructure project and flood attenuation scheme developed by the HCA, Halcrow, Birse, NCC and WNDC. It aims to serve the residents of Northampton, and opens up development opportunities for 12,000 homes.
