£1.7 million for Sandy Lane Relief Road
17 September 2008
Board members have approved funding of over £1.7 million which will allow the construction of the southern section of the Sandy Lane Relief Road to go ahead. Without this injection of money from West Northamptonshire Development Corporation, the project would not have been able to proceed due to accelerated costs. Also, the £4.2 million of funding previously awarded to the project from the government’s Community Infrastructure Fund would have been lost.
WNDC’s Director of Infrastructure Delivery, Harj Dhaliwal, said:
“It is important for WNDC to help facilitate the construction of this new road because it opens up a large site for future homes, jobs and investment. Although the economy is currently suffering a downturn we must be prepared for the turnaround. WNDC is lucky to be in a position of delivery and is committed to providing funding for infrastructure in advance of growth.”
The completed Sandy Lane Relief Road will release a key future development site at Upton Lodge, which could potentially produce a large number of houses and a significant employment area, creating hundreds of jobs for Northampton. It is also the essential first step in the long term alleviation of traffic congestion and road connectivity in Northampton, whilst bringing relief to the residents of nearby Harpole.
