Centrepiece of Moat Lane development scoops a national award

The renovation of Bury Mount in Towcester town centre has won a prestigious national award.  The scheme, which was completed in April 2010, has received a BALI award from the British Association of Landscape Industries.  It was recognised in the Land Renewal and Regeneration category at an awards ceremony in December.

Originally built in the 12th century, Bury Mount is an ancient medieval fortification which has been renovated as a new public space and historic attraction. It has been revitalised at the same time as the neighbouring Water Meadows, a 33 acre historic park, which has been brought into public ownership and restored for the local community to use.

They are a central part of the wider Moat Lane development, which includes the creation of new shops, offices and community facilities, as well as a new hotel and library in Towcester’s historic town centre.  The Moat Lane development was approved by WNDC’s planning committee in September 2010, subject to a number of outstanding issues being resolved. A development partner for the scheme is currently being secured.

Chris Garden, WNDC’s Director of Regeneration and Development said: “The regeneration of the Moat Lane area will showcase the historic heart of Towcester alongside modern new facilities. The restored Bury Mount represents the first phase of the scheme, and has quickly become an important part of the town centre. It’s very pleasing to see that it has been recognised with this award”

Jean Morgan, Chief Executive from South Northamptonshire Council, echoed these comments: “Bury Mount is already a real asset to the community, and is enjoyed on a daily basis. We are pleased that our community open space has been recognised nationally.”

The Moat Lane project is led by South Northamptonshire Council, Northamptonshire County Council and the West Northamptonshire Development Corporation. It has benefited from significant funding and support from these organisations as well as Northamptonshire Enterprise Limited, the East Midlands Development Agency and the Homes & Communities Agency.
